Veterans Day is November 11, and to many of us is known as a day off of work or to have a BBQ with family and friends. But do you know the actual meaning or why it’s important? Read on below; we’ve got you covered.
The Difference Between Memorial Day, Labor Day and Veterans Day
With so many holidays revolving around BBQs, we know it can get confusing. But each of these holidays serves a very important purpose:
- Veterans Day–to honor and remember all who have served in the military.
- Memorial Day–to reflect on and honor all who sacrificed their lives for our country.
- Labor Day–to celebrate all the workers who contribute to America’s labor force.
Veterans Day actually was a result of the end of World War I. The plan was to call it Armistice Day in remembrance of the day Germany signed the Armistice Agreement, signifying the end of the “Great War.” It changed to Veterans Day after World War II in an effort to remember all who served our country.
Memorial Day, on the other hand, started after the Civil War. It was to remember the loss of so many American lives. To this day, we remember Memorial Day specifically for those who died while in service to our country.
Although it is a holiday and often a day to BBQ, Labor Day doesn’t have much to do with veterans or military in general. It actually is simply a day off for all of America’s workers, or laborers, if you will.
A Few Ways to Celebrate Veterans Day
At Valor, we believe it imperative to help out our veterans who have worked so hard to protect us. This November 11, look out for an event near you and see how you can volunteer. Here are a few ways to get you started:
- Volunteer for the VA Central Ohio Healthcare System
- Set up your Amazon or Target accounts to donate to veterans
- Send a Christmas Gift to a veteran through United for Change
- Or do something kind for a veteran you know.
We hope you have a great Veterans Day, and remember to do something to remember and help out those who served our country.
